Children learn about careers and importance of staying in school
July 14, 2008 – 6:35PM
During the month of May, the Communities in Schools program at York Chester Middle School sponsored three events.
Communities in Schools is a national program that connects community resources with schools to help young people learn, stay in school and prepare for life. It is facilitated locally through the Alliance for Children and Youth, a United Way Agency.
A Career Expo was held for eighth-grade students and featured representatives from 20 area businesses with more than 50 presenters sharing their job information and careers. Students were coached on resume building, professional skills and had hands-on presentations from local businessmen and women.
The City of Gastonia Public Works Department anchored the event, sending city vehicles that allowed students some hands-on opportunities to experience job skills and interact with public works support personnel.
City fire, police, traffic, transportation, recreation and utilities, engineering and maintenance all demonstrated the capabilities of their departments.
